Packaging design and innovation are becoming more and more important when it comes to a modern consumer. Historically pharma products and devices were less affected by consumer trends but that’s no longer the case, as packaging design plays a huge role in their decision-making process when choosing pharmaceuticals.

Therefore it is essential to determine what packaging design works best and what innovative trends can be spotted in the market. This article will look at three key themes that affect consumers’ buying decisions and pharma packaging design.

1.       Value-added packaging design

Value-added packaging design can be defined as something extra on the value of a product itself. Packaging that can provide an additional functionality increases brand loyalty and recognition. In recent years, this trend was mostly exploited by luxury, cosmetics, and food & drink brands; however, value-added packaging design is more and more often used for pharmaceuticals and medical devices.

2.       Visually appealing packaging design

It’s not a secret that a statistical consumer would choose the most visually appealing product if he/she needed to decide between few with similar functions. Originally it wasn’t a case for pharma products and medical devices; however, the competition in this industry is at its peak. Thus pharma packaging design needs to be carefully considered and a fair amount of resources should be invested in making product’s packaging design visually appealing and attractive.

3.       Sustainable packaging design

Packaging design needs to reflect a recent sustainability wave. Consumers want to contribute to a sustainable future, but it’s not always easy if, for example, product’s packaging is not recyclable. Your packaging design should reflect this trend and become eco-friendly, in order to be successful.
