12:45 pm The Analysis of Cannabis Materials within a Framework of National and European Regulation
There is global concern over the quality and toxicological safety of cannabis plant material, extracted oils and end user formulations. To address this, several leading organisations have introduced analytical tests to show that any residues present, are below those concentrations at which they become a concern. Such residues might include heavy metals, residual solvents, pesticides and mycotoxins for example.
A survey of global country regulations reveals that some countries/states have specified limits dictating whether a product is deemed safe for public use, but these limits vary depending on the geographical location. For example, Canada and Australia have country regulations, and the United States is focused on state regulation. But what about Europe and the general position needed to ensure that a cannabis supply chain is safe?
For commodities that are to be used within the EU community, the interest has seen a push towards having materials conform to the EU Pharmacopeia for medicinal cannabis.
This presentation outlines the core chemical analysis programs that need to be in place in order to meet those EU Pharmacopeia standards, including the analysis of pesticides aligned with EU. Ph 2.8.13 requirements.
