Welcome to the 12th Annual Fire Protection and Safety in Tunnels 2019 on Conference: the key industry event to showcase major innovations for designing, implementing and upgrading tunnel fire and safety projects. Marking our 12th year of running the prestigious event, we will be joined by a thought leading speaker faculty sharing their expertise and insight into tunnel safety.
Why this conference
Over 20 presenters will join us from across Europe and beyond to share insight on tunnel safety, these case studies illuminate best practice on reducing risk and managing fire when it occurs.
The pre-conference day is solely focused on understanding the dynamic scope of tunnel construction and how this is influential in ensuring tunnel safety in case of incidents. The afternoon will start with interactive workshops that will showcase major projects whilst being interactive and solution focused.
The conference will be full of networking opportunities allowing delegates the opportunity to share their experience on a one-to-one basis. It will also enable delegates the chance to explore the latest technologies the industry has to offer, guaranteeing greater safety provisions are in place to minimize damage from fire-related incidents.

Benjamin Truchot
Head of Fire and Dispersion Department,Ineris
Biography: Born in 1980, Benjamin is an engineer in mechanics with a specialisation in fluids mechanics and thermo chemistry (INSA Rouen and CORIA). He also has a PhD in Energy and reactive flows (IFP and INP Toulouse). Since 2006, he worked as an engineer in the Accidental Risk Division of INERIS in the field of Fire and Ventilation. He uses both experimental approach and numerical simulation. He was the manager of different national research projects dedicated to underground safety (fire, explosion, toxic gas dispersion). He also achieves studies in the field of fire and ventilation for different underground infrastructures: storage, mines and tunnels. Since 2011, he is in charge of the Fire and Dispersion unit in INERIS.

Marius Raddum
Inspector of Accidents,Accident Investigation Board Norway
Biography: Marius Raddum is the Accident investigator for AIBN (Accident Investigation Board Norway), Road traffic, since 2011. Marius have a Civil Engineer education and has investigated 6 major tunnel fires in Norway: Oslofjordtunnelen (2011); Gudvangatunnelen I (2013); Gudvangatunnelen II (2015); Skatestraumtunnelen (2015); Fjaerlandstunnelen (2017) and Oslofjordtunnelen (2017).

Raf Derhaeg
Tunnel Safety Supervisor,Infrabel
Biography: I started in 2006 as a traffic and safety regulator at Infrabel at the signal box of Brussels-North, one of the two main signal boxes of the Brussels area. In 2010 I was promoted after internal exams and became head of the signal box. One year later, in 2011, I was again promoted and became Safety Analyst. In 2013 I moved back to the Brussels-North signal box as head of supervision. From September 2014 until april I worked at the planning of infrastructure works for the Brussels area. As of april 2018 I was transferred to the division of Emergency Planning and Tunnel Safety as Tunnel Safety Supervisor for the Brussels tunnels.

Rana Ilgaz
Head of Profession Highways and Traffic,TfL
Biography: Rana is Head of Profession – Highways and Traffic for TfL Engineering. TfL is London’s strategic transport authority responsible for all transport modes and their wide range of assets. Rana is responsible for Engineers supporting London’s strategic 580 km long road network including its vital infrastructure, as well as all of London’s traffic signals. Rana is a civil engineer from Aachen University. In previous roles she has delivered Intelligent Transport Systems projects across Europe. As Chief Engineer Traffic Systems her team developed and maintained London’s traffic management and control systems and as a highlight she led the traffic systems readiness for the 2012 Games. More recently Rana oversaw the design of cycling and transformational schemes for TfL, and the Engineering support to asset operations.

Stephen Fowler
Head of Health and Safety UK,Eurotunnel
Biography: Stephen started his working career in the construction industry, undertaking different roles in carpentry, welding and engineering, before gravitating to a role in Health & Safety. Having played an integral part on major projects, such as the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, M25 widening and Crossrail projects, Stephen studied in different Health and Safety qualifications to become a chartered Health & Safety professional with the Institute of Occupational Safety & Health. Now employed by Eurotunnel as the Head of Health & Safety UK, has started to develop an understanding of the complexities of working for a bi-national company and varying approaches to legislation in both parent countries

Samuel Backman
Development Engineer Health & Safety,Boliden
Biography: Samuel Bäckman started working for Boliden at the smelter Rönnskärsverket in 2010 after studying fire protection engineering at Luleå University of Technology. The first year was spent working on Seveso-related chemical risk analysis before switching organization to Boliden Mines. Since 2011 he’s been working as a development engineer at Boliden Mines Health & Safety department with focus on fire safety and emergency preparedness both for underground operations as well as open pit mines. A recent area of interest with many challenges ahead is fire safety related to automation and battery vehicles. During this period, he’s also been part of the fire safety group connected to the Swedish industry association of mines and mineral producers, Svemin.

Richie Cahill
Safety Officer,Boliden
Biography: Richie Cahill joined Tara Mines in 1982 and worked as a craftsman in the underground mobile equipment department. During this time he was a voluntary member of the mine rescue and underground ambulance services. In 2008 Richie was elected by the Boliden Tara Mines workforce to the position of Full Time Safety Representative. In 2011 Richie was appointed as a Health & Safety Officer at Boliden Tara Mines and is currently the trainer and mine rescue officer for the Boliden Tara Mine Rescue Organisation.

Ian Parkhouse
Fire and Rescue Service Liaison Manager,High Speed Two
Biography: Ian is the HS2 Fire and Rescue Service Engagement Lead. Ian is responsible for all liaison and engagement requirements between the Fire and Rescue Service (FRS) and HS2, he specifically manages and coordinates the Qualitative Design Review process between Contractors, HS2 and the FRS to achieve agreement on the infrastructure design from a fire safety and emergency intervention perspective. Ian has been working on the project since 2018, previously to this he was employed by a local authority Fire Service for 31+ years.

Mark Gilbey
Tunnel Systems Lead,High Speed Two
Biography: Mark is a Mechanical Engineer who specialises in tunnel ventilation, fire and systems. Mark has been with WSP for 20 years and is their technical discipline lead for tunnel ventilation in Europe. Since 2012 he has been leading the development of the tunnel ventilation and tunnel systems for HS2.

Maria Marton
Expert on Road Infrastructure and Tunnel Safety,Swedish Transport Agency
Biography: Maria Marton is a Civil Engineer and has more than 30 years of experience in the road transport area and its steering mechanisms. She has strategic expertise in Tunnel Safety and ITS, Intelligent Transport Systems and long regulations expertise of tunnel design and ITS performance. She has been working 16 years at the Swedish National Road administration in different positions, 10 years as consultant and head of an office in the field of transport related analyses. Since 2011 she works as an expert in the Swedish Transport Agency, at the Road and Rail department, a public authority, responsible for all transport related regulation for all modes of transport. She is currently member of the PIARC Technical Committee on Road Tunnel Operations. Since 2011 she is Swedish Member State representative in the EU Commission, Tunnel Safety Committee and in the EU ITS Committee and participates in the regulation activities in the fields.

Jakob Böttger
Team leader Planning and deployment fire brigade,BLS
Biography: After several years in the rescue service, Jakob Böttger specialized in the field of rescue engineering. As head of planning and deployment of the fire brigade, he is primarily active in risk assessment and in the derivation of measures in emergency plans for railway incidents. These include projects at the Lötschberg base tunnel, the Gotthard and Ceneri base tunnel and a number of smaller tunnels operated by BLS Netz AG.

Biography: Civil/Geotechnical engineer, involved in large-scale metro projects in Greece and Denmark since 2008, with particular expertise in underground stations design and construction as well as mechanized tunneling. He is working for the Copenhagen Cityringen Metro project since June 2011 and currently holds the position of Technical & Design Director

Petros Papaghiannakis

Biography: Petros Papaghiannakis is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of LFP, a mixed-traffic cross-border line between Perpignan (France) and Figueras (Spain). During his carrier, Petros Papaghiannakis acquired a high level of expertise in railways technology, rolling stock, signalling, project management, operations, maintenance and safety. He has also acquired a significant experience in project finance and debt restructuring in the frame of the concession’s refinancing process.

Biography: Marc is the Responsible for the Catenary Energy system and Tunnel Equipment unit for Línea Figueras Perpignan S.A. During his carrier, Marc Viñas acquired a high level, project management, operations, maintenance and management of the equipment and personnel that perform the maintenance of the railway tunnel and the multiple security elements that are part of it.

Steffen De Muynck

Biography: Steffen De Muynck started working for FLIR in 2012 and is currently part of the product management team. FLIR provides innovative and intelligent transportation solutions that enhance safety and efficiency in cities, on highways and in tunnels. Steffen primarily focuses on building and expanding existing markets such as tunnels and highways but also works on developing new markets such as the fire detection and public transportation market. Steffen is married and has expanded his family in the beginning of June with a second daughter. He enjoys cooking, traveling and the occasional Belgian beer. Biography: Holds a Master of Science in Engineering & Management from Linköping University in Sweden. 30 years of experiences within the power and automation industry, abroad assignments in Germany, Ecuador, USA and Denmark. Competences from several roles from engineering, internal auditing, controlling to management positions. Today she is responsible for developing new IoT services for the mining businesses including Virtual, Augmented, Mixed, Extended Reality and Drones.
