Green Hotel of the Year
The Romanos, A Luxury Collection Resort, Costa Navarino, Messinia, Greece
Costa Navarino is the prime sustainable destination in the Peloponnese, Greece. One of the most unspoiled and breath taking seaside Mediterranean landscapes, this area has been shaped by 4,500 years of history. Costa Navarino promotes the region of Messinia while preserving its natural beauty and historical heritage.
More than 90% of the total land area is dedicated to natural and planted greenery and the building footprint is less than 10%. During construction, Costa Navarino initiated the biggest olive-tree transplanting program in Europe in an effort to preserve the age-long landscape. Olive trees were uprooted and temporarily planted in a specially prepared reception area. As construction progressed, these trees were replanted in their final location. With a success rate at nearly 100%, more than 6,500 olive trees have already been replanted, aiming to reach 16,000 upon completion of Costa Navarino.
Costa Navarino has participated in a joint venture developing and installing a 12MWp capacity photovoltaic park – one of the largest of its kind in Greece. Connected to the national grid, where it delivers on an annual basis renewable electrical energy amounting to 19, 5 GWh – more than the current annual electricity needs of Costa Navarino.
Significant reductions in energy consumption and CO2 emissions have been achieved after installing the biggest geothermal system of its kind in Europe. Advanced materials and systems are used in the buildings such as energy-efficient window panes, external wall insulation systems, energy-efficient lighting, electronic lighting ballasts and central lighting control systems.
As a result of an extensive water resource management study, the irrigation needs of Costa Navarino, are met by two reservoirs with approximate total capacity of 700,000 m³. A large-scale waste water-treatment facility is also operated, along with an extensive recycling program for paper, plastics, glass, used oil, batteries and organic waste is set in motion, resulting in a significant reduction of the waste ending up in landfills
Costa Navarino is contributing to a pioneering program for protecting the habitat of the only European population of the African chameleon in Gialovalagoon. The lagoon is home to 271 recorded bird species, many of which are rare. As well as an extensive monitoring and protection program for the loggerhead sea turtle in cooperation with Archelon. The program annually records the population while mapping, monitoring and protecting the nests and a detailed action plan ensures that eggs and hatchlings are protected until their final journey to the sea.
