Highlights from 2017
Chaired by the stellar Dr. Tony Cash, the FPRS programme incorporates presentations, panels, interviews and roundtables on the pressing issues impacting the sector. 2017 saw participation from some of the biggest names in the business, including but not limited to; Alstom, Bombardier, Carleton University, European Rail Agency, Hitachi, Metroselskabet, RIFA, RISE, Siemens, Swedish Transport Administration and US Department of Transport.
We began the 2017 speaking programme with an update from the European Rail Agency, who joined us to talk about the EU framework for harmonisation of the railway system and an update on the changes introduced by the 4th Railway Package. This exciting presentation was followed by a live interview with Bombardier who spoke about the overall cost impact of EN 45545 on carbuilders and gave their perspective on how to manage costs of testing, redesign and materials. The morning was rounded off by test data presented by the U.S. Department of Transportation who highlighted current research conducted under the Federal Railroad Administration’s Equipment Safety Research Programme.
Day 1 finished on a high note with a joint presentation from the CEN TC 256 WG01 Working Group, who shared their recent progress on the European standard, the improvements made under EN45545-2 on seat testing and influential factors to achieve the quickest evacuation time.
Day 2 didn’t disappoint, we kicked off with Alstom who presented on fire resistance testing in technical cabinets and evaluating the gaps in the existing standards requirements. We moved onto a lively debate on how to manage fire safety costs and should rolling stock or infrastructure cover the greatest costs. Day 2 culminated in roundtable debates, where delegates had the opportunity to get into the detail and leave with actionable insight.
We’ll be growing the event again in 2018 and hope to see you there.
