Highlights from 2018

Chaired by the stellar Dr. Tony Cash, the FPRS programme incorporates presentations, panels, interviews and roundtables on the pressing issues impacting the sector. The 2018 delegates came from across the globe including CRRC based in Massachusetts and Gautrain based in South Africa.

We began the 2018 speaking programme with an update from the European Rail Agency on safety in railway tunnels’ TSI and ‘Locomotives and passenger carriages’ TSI. Following this informative presentation, we learnt about change control at Virgin Trains and the importance of refurbishing trains in the correct manner to uphold safety measures in existing rolling stock. Serge Metral preceded this with a session focused on the revision of the EN45545 and the upcoming revisions and how we should adapt to cater to them. Later on in the day, we explored the increasing use of an open gangway and the implications this may have on fire safety.

Day 1 concluded on a high note with an exclusive presentation by fire safety leader London Underground and their approach to using non-flammable materials for all areas of the rolling stock as a preventative measure. This was shortly followed by an exclusive interview on the changes Brexit may bring to regulation and how we can prepare for these possible changes.

Day 2 maintained the same level of quality and excitement as day 1. During the day, we looked at the latest progress on the work done by CEN TC256 WG01 on the European standard EN45545 as well as advancements being made on developments of Africa’s most advanced railway transit system- Gautrain. Lastly, the presentations concluded by looking at tests being made by the US Department of Transport in fire safety requirements for floor assemblies and interior finishes.

Be sure to participate in the 2019 edition which promises to deliver new regulatory updates, global advancements in rolling stock and solutions to current industry challenges.
