Highlights from Fire Protection and Safety in Tunnels 2016

2016 saw delegates gather to share their experiences and explore the latest developments in the tunnelling industry. The event featured presentations from some of the leading experts within Europe and gave attendees the opportunity to discover new ways of working which have brought about improvements not only for tunnel users but also those which give companies better resources and ideas.

Highlights included:

Torben Holvad, Economic Adviser, European Railway Agency kicking off the event with an exclusive presentation looking at outlining the SRT TSI now and in the future to determine how it benefits the overall safety in tunnels. Delving into the issues which improve the protection and safety, Providing a comparison of guidelines for road and rail tunnels to identify where they overlap and what they can learn from each other. There was also consideration of tunnel security under the light of recent terrorist attacks to determine an appropriate response.

Ulf Lundstrom, Tunnel Safety Officer, Trafikverket (Swedish Transport Administration) delivered a great session on examining effective use of ventilation systems to determine how they can best contribute to fire suppression strategies. He look at when and how should we use our ventilation and allowed a deeper understanding of the importance of adjusting ventilation to specific scenarios. We also were able to investigate smoke spread models to determine if ventilation systems can be used more appropriately to improve passenger safety during fire.

Our industry research has consistently showed that this is the perfect opportunity for you to network and learn from your peers. Our roundtable sessions were really well-received covering a variety of topics such as comparing best practices in fire protection and emergency management in underground railways and comparing smoke suppression strategies and the effective use of ventilation.
