Highlights on the 2018 agenda

The 2018 edition of the Small Hydro Latin America conference welcomed a diverse and very insightful line-up of speakers, to share best practices and knowledge on all your pressing challenges.

The conference kicked off by shedding light on the Ituango hydroelectric project. William Giraldo Jiménez, Vice President Energy Generation Ituango Hydro Plant from EPM delivered a keynote presentation on the project’s contingency and its current status. William Giraldo Jiménez replied to the numerous questions from the audience and delivered real key takeaways for the industry on the Ituango project’s experience. Following’ on from this presentation, Carlos Uribe, General Manager of Hidroeléctricas del Café; Pablo Hernán Corredor Avella, General Manager of PHC Servicios Integrados Group S.A.S. and  Jaime Arenas Plata, Director of the Cluster Sustainable Energy of the Chamber of Commerce of Medellín para Antioquia, discussed how the small hydro industry will be impacted by the Ituango crisis. Can this be an opportunity or more likely a threat?

From a more technical point of view, the conference showcased very insightful presentations; Francisco Hernández, Leader Civil Engineer at Celsia explored the basics of dam safety monitoring to facilitate SHP maintenance and good operations. Mauricio Mendez, Operations and Maintain Manager and Sara Ramirez, Environmental Coordinator from LAREIF, presented an engaging session on how to address sediments management and facilitate long-term maintenance of a SHP. Finally Wilhen Salazar, Senior Civil Engineer at HMV Engineers highlighted in a very dynamic session the importance of studies to develop safe projects when diving into the real generation of SHP in Colombia.

This is already a lot but far from finished! The line-up of speakers and topics this year has never been so diverse. We have hosted an on-stage interview with Marcial Medina, Director Social Responsibility, Communities Relations and Communication from Statkraft Perú to discuss community culture; we have also welcomed insightful presentations from industry analysis leaders such as Jorge M. Dengo Garrón from Celsia, Juan Pablo Restrepo from EPM and Juan Pablo Garcés from Proeléctrica who deciphered the future of small hydro power in a non-conventional energy growing market.

Last highlight but not least, the Small Hydro Latin America conference welcomed on stage more institutional players: Sebastián Ortega Arango from XM, delivered a presentation on the integration of variable renewable sources of energy in the Colombian electric system; while Lynette Stephanie Boshell Rincón, from the ANLA shed light on the Incentives for the promotion of Non-Conventional Sources of Energy, Law 1715 of 2014.

This highlights are only an overview of an amazing event which put on stage dedicated and engaged speakers.
