Gran MeliáPalacio de los Duques, Madrid, Spain

A former 19th century palace, the hotel is in a prime location in the Habsburg district next to the Royal Palace, the Almudena Cathedral, Opera House, the Senate and Gran Via.

The Gran Meliá Palacio de los Duquesis housed in the former residence of the Dukes of Granada de Egaand Villahermosa, art collectors and members of the Madrid intelligentsia of the mid-nineteenth century. Their passion for the art of Velazquez, one of whose works they donated to the Prado Museum, can be felt in every corner.

The hotel occupies the former site of the Nuns of Santo Domingo Convent (13th century), reminding us of the ecclesiastical greatness of an era, while the Dukes of Ega and Villahermosa Palace, an important example of Elizabethan architecture, place us on the 19th century raistocracy scene. The palace dates back to 1850 and is the work of Italian architect Matías Laviña,

Gran Meliá Palacio de los Duquesis the result of an ambitious revamp under the direction of Spanish architect Alvaro Sans.

The wide and refined spaces pay homage to Velázquez and the interior decoration is inspired by the his work: its colors, the clean lines and the noble materials have been used with mastery to recreate a classic elegance with avant-garde touches, creating an ambience of luxury and unique comfort.

Because of the passion of the original owners of the palace, the hotel decoration is inspired by art, having the great Spanish artist Velazquez, and his masterpieces as tireless inspiration. Nine replicas of his paintings crown its 180 spacious guests rooms and lobby area, such as “The surrender of Breda” or admire Velazquez’s best and most well-known work in the Presidential Suite “Las Meninas”.
