The original concept in 2010 led to the development of a 3D QR-type code containing features as small as 5 microns in height and less than 20 microns in aspect.  SofMat was established in 2011 to further develop these 3D imprinting and reading technologies.

Initially the technology was only applicable to batch-marking processes but subsequent developments led to a technique for sequential-marking that produces pre-programmed micron and sub-micron sized features on products, applied either during or post manufacture.  The sequential marking produces a very high data density in a small area facilitating individual identification.

All of the SofMat products have been designed for easy integration into existing production lines allowing application of client specific markings on both products & all layers of packaging.

Further development of the SofMat technology involved the production of a low-cost hand-held reader capable of sub-micron resolution.  This facilitates authentification of items throughout the supply chain.
