The Three Key Parameters to Keeping Patient Retention

Patient retention is the main reason why there are delays in clinical trials and the main factor why studies fail as they do not meet the recruitment criteria. Patient recruitment accounts for 27% of development costs, which equates to US$5.9 billion annually globally. However, only one patient out of 20 will provide the results that can be included in the trial, according to a study by Wang et al.

The Three Key Parameters to Keeping Patient Retention

1)    Understanding your Patient

When it comes to running your clinical trial, it is important to make them understand the trial’s process and educate them about the risks involved. Providing more insight into the trial will make it the trial more comfortable for them.

2)    Incentives of Staying in the Clinical Trial

Make the patient understand the benefits of staying in the clinical trial, such as receiving medical treatment, cash compensation, expenses reimbursed, and other incentives which you can provide.

3)    Counselling

When the patient has successfully enrolled in the study, it is imperative you maintain the motivation throughout the trial course. Regular appointments with your patient are advised to provide support and positive reinforcements to help the patient stay throughout to trial completion.

The trial’s success is heavily dependent on the enrolment of patients. However, due to the increasing amount of trials run globally, the recruitment pool has become reduced. Creating patient-centric studies has become important in today’s trials from keeping patients from dropping out.

In our OCT Mid-Atlantic agenda, we have included a talk by Bill Hearl (CEO of Immunomic Therapeutics Inc.) to provide an insight on how to foster academic partnerships to form stronger bonds with patient recruitment challenges. The talk will also discuss how to work alongside your CRO in finding solutions to increase patient recruitment. If you want to know what else we have included in our program, click here.
