What do we mean by sustainable development & why should we embrace it?

We have been hearing phrases like “sustainability”, “sustainable development”, “waste management” and “circular economy” more than often recently. But what do we really mean by that? How is sustainable development related with packaging? And more importantly – why do we need to harness sustainable development?

What is the definition of the sustainable development?

European Union defined sustainable development back in 1987, and the concept hasn’t really changed since, becoming a key objective of the European Union. If we follow the EU’s definition sustainability is a “development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” meaning that we do need to think about the future when consuming today.

Understanding the importance of sustainability

If you aren’t convinced that sustainable development is highly important, we have few shocking examples for you. Do you know how many disposable coffee cups are thrown away every single day in UK alone? Around 7 million… That’s more than 2.5 billion cups per year and only less than 1% of them can be recycled. It gets worse – every year US citizens throw away 25 billion non-recyclable styrofoam coffee cups and consume 146 billion cups of coffee in total. And all these numbers are just from coffee consumption alone!

How does packaging fit in a picture?

Even though waste facts and figures are exceptionally high, still not everyone fully understands the importance of sustainable development. In other cases, individuals, like consumers, might be very conscious about sustainability and recycling, but they might be too small alone to make an impact. Therefore we need everyone to collaborate – word needs for big brands to be environmental friendly and make sure that their packaging is sustainable and recyclable to set an example; and smaller brands / SMEs need to find solution providers that understand what sustainable development is and can provide reliable packaging services to reduce waste.

Why should sustainable development be embraced?

In short, sustainability should be embraced to provide future generations with better life. Every individual should understand why sustainable development is important, but at the end of the day, it is brand’s responsibility to make sure that their product comes in a sustainable packaging. During this year’s Beverage Packaging Congress sustainable development will be one of the key topics in discussion. If you have a sustainable packaging solution to showcase – email us to find out about exhibiting and sponsoring opportunities available and convince brand owners how can your services help to embrace sustainable development in beverages packaging.
